Apply for Your TIE
We assist with all TIE applications and book TIE appointments in Barcelona and some parts of Spain.
What is the TIE and Why Do You Need It?
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is Spain’s mandatory biometric residence card for non-EU/EEA citizens. It certifies your legal residency and is required after arriving with a residence visa or renewing your residency. The TIE is essential for travel in and out of Spain and the wider Schengen area, and also for accessing key services such as social security, public healthcare, and even opening a bank account.
Who must apply for the TIE?
You must apply for your TIE within 30 days of entering Spain on a valid residency visa, or after renewing your residency in Spain.
New Residents who have arrived in Spain with a valid residence visa
Anyone who has successfully applied for or renewed their residency in Spain
Non-EU/EEA family members of the visa holder
How to apply for the TIE
You must attend an in-person appointment at an authorized police station in the province where you live in Spain. During the appointment, you will submit your completed application form, provide the required supporting documents, and give biometric data (fingerprints, photo, and signature).
Documents required for the TIE:
Passport & Visa
A valid passport (original and copy of biometric details page) and the visa or residence permit that granted you entry into Spain.
Application Form for the TIE
A completed application form for the TIE. In most cases, this is the EX17. For Digital Nomad Visa holders, it is the MI application form.
Proof of Address in Spain
Certificate of address registration (empadronamiento), obtained from your local town hall. This must be dated within 3 months before the date of your TIE Appointment.
Confirmation of Fee Payment
The official fee payment form (Modelo 790, Código 012), stamped as paid or with payment confirmation. The fee has to be paid before the appointment and you must bring both the form and the confirmation of payment to your appointment.
Proof of Entry into Spain/Schengen Area
Your entry stamp in your passport or official entry declaration to demonstrate your date of arrival in Spain or within the Schengen zone.
Proof of Residency Approval
Your visa approval in your passport, or resolution of renewal / residency authorization.
Recent Passport Photo
A recent biometric passport-sized photograph, meeting Spanish ID photo requirements.
Other Documents
Depending on your case, additional documents may be required. For example, students may need to bring their original confirmation of enrolment in their Spanish institution, family members may need family relationship certificates, proof of health insurance etc).
TIE Application Process
In most cases, the first step before applying for your TIE is registering your local address with the town hall (empadronamiento). This ensures your residence is officially recorded and is often required for your appointment.
Register Address
Register your Spanish address at your local town hall office (empadronamiento).
Book TIE Appointment
Schedule your TIE appointment (cita previa) online at the police website.
Gather all Documents
Get all your documents ready including the tax payment form ((Modelo 790, Código 012) and confirmation of payment from a Spanish bank.
Attend TIE Appointment
Submit your application and biometric data (fingerprints, photo, and signature) during the appointment.
Collect TIE
Collect your TIE in approximately 30 days – some police stations require an appointment to collect your TIE.
As TIE appointments can take a while to procure and since it can take up to 30 days after your appointment to collect your TIE, ensuring your TIE application is accurate and complete is essential to avoid significant delays. The TIE is not only required for travel purposes, but also for accessing key services.
